Join the conversation! On April 13-14, 2026, the University of South Carolina is hosting a major conference examining the challenges and opportunities of civic engagement in contemporary democracy with multiple impressive keynote speakers. At a moment when “civics” is back in the spotlight, renowned scholars and civic leaders from around the country will come together to ask: What does meaningful civic participation really look like today? Can we build power and bridge divides—or are those goals in tension? What role should universities play in shaping the future of democracy?

This will be a great opportunity for students to hear experts from Columbia, Brown, Cornell, and more grapple with the tensions of the forms of civic engagement. You can attend the whole conference or pick and choose sessions that interest you or fit your schedule. Everything is free and open to the public, as long as you register in advance!
